Antithrombin-III (AT-III) is a member of the serine protease inhibitor (serpin) superfamily encoded by the SERPINC1 gene. Research has found that AT-III is a biomarker for disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). This protein inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases in the coagulation system, regulating the cascade of clotting reactions. AT-III is the most important inhibitor of coagulation factors, and even minor changes in AT-III levels can significantly increase the risk of thromboembolism.AT-III can inhibit inflammation through both coagulation-dependent and coagulation-independent mechanisms. In addition to AT-III deficiency, both AT-III and its encoding gene SERPINC1 have been implicated in various diseases such as hypertension and kidney disease.
