KITLG Overview

Stem cell factor (SCF) is a cytokine that binds to the c-Kit receptor and exists as both a transmembrane protein and a soluble protein.SCF promotes mast cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and survival, as well as the release of histamine and trypsin-like enzymes, the latter two of which are involved in the allergic response.SCF synergizes with various growth factors such as IL-3, IL-6, IL-11, GM-CSF, G-CSF, and Epo. , G-CSF and Epo synergize together to induce myeloid and erythroid colony formation. This cytokine plays an important role in hematopoiesis (blood cell production), spermatogenesis and melanogenesis. Myocardial-specific overexpression of transmembrane SCF promotes stem cell migration, improves cardiac function after myocardial infarction, and animal survival. Mutations in the SCF gene in dogs indicate that this gene is a candidate susceptibility gene for skin cancer.
