The erythropoietin receptor (EPOR) is encoded by the EPOR gene in humans. It is a polypeptide with a molecular weight of 59 kDa and is a member of the cytokine receptor family. The cytoplasmic domain of EPOR contains many tyrosines phosphorylated by Janus kinase 2, which can serve as anchor points for intracellular pathway signaling and transcriptional activation factors. The deficiency of the erythropoietin receptor can lead to erythroleukemia and familial polycythemia. Excessive production of red blood cells can lead to adverse cardiovascular events, such as thrombosis and stroke. EPOR signals can prevent neuronal death and ischemic damage.
